Although there is yet a requirement to be certified, a medical coder still needs to be trained to deal with accuracy and exactness in the job. Thus it is highly recommended for one to learn up the theories connected with the job. Generally, the training involves taking up programs to study theories in medical standardized codes, medical terminology, pharmacology, anatomy, diseases, insurance, and healthcare. Currently, there is not much focus on training in practicing in a real hospital and clinic settings. Nevertheless, there is still growth in need for medical coding and we might see more changes in the available programs in training in the future.

One who obtains medical coding training will end up working as a medical coder. Most medical coder normally works at hospitals or clinics. Somehow there is a growing trend for this profession to be based at home though this is quite unlikely for now.
