LED lights are the future of lighting. Most of the lighting designers use them as the main tool for their creations. The abbreviation of LED stands for Light Emitting Diode.

LED technology is using semiconductor materials. A PN junction must be formed in order to create the LED. Such a junction has a rectifying (diodic) behavior, which means that the current flows much easier in one direction than the other. The semiconductor material used in LEDs must have a direct band-gap. Direct band-gap semiconductors can generate light when the junction is under forward bias. When bias is applied, photons are released. The emitted color of the light depends on the energy gap of the semiconductor; therefore the color of the LED depends on the material used to design it.

Nowadays LED lights can be applied everywhere and they are able to replace all kinds of lighting. There is a great variety of LED products, such as light bulbs, spotlights, LED strips, LED tubes and many more. There is always something suitable for any occasion and they also come in a variety of colors, such as red, green, blue and white. The combination of the colors can create different moods and feelings in a space.

LED lights have many advantages. The main advantage of the LEDs is the power saving. By switching to LED technology the electricity bill is reduced by more than 75%. Additionally, they have a long lifetime. For example, a quality LED light bulb lasts over 50,000 hours of continuous operation. Moreover, they are eco-friendly, as they contain no harmful substances and they give 90% more light and 90% less heat.

A “disadvantage” of LED lights is their price. They are more expensive than traditional light bulbs, but this is because the cost of manufacture is much higher. However, the higher initial investment for the LEDs can be recuperated, as the electricity bill will be reduced, and the user can start saving money even from the first 1-2 months of using the new lights.

Although LED lights have many advantages, the user has to take care when switching to LED technology, as not all the LEDs are the same. There are different manufactures, which offer different qualities. An easy way to understand the quality of an LED is to compare the prices. If there is a manufacture that offers an LED at a much lower price, then it is probably a low-efficiency light. The power efficiency of an LED chip is a very important factor in the savings. The higher it is, the higher the quality of the LED light and the amount of saving money. Additionally, there are manufacturers that offer a one to three years warranty. Thus this is another sign of a good quality product.

LED technology is a fast-growing technology. LED lights have a lot of advantages, but a careful selection of the light devices must be made.
